Natural & Cultural Significance
The forestland that had been zoned for the development of six homes, was previously referred to as “Hawks Nest East” and is part of the historic, traditional land base of the Wampanoag on Cape Cod.
Now called Awâhsh Uwatuhshât, the Wampanoag term for hawks' nest, this land abuts the 236-acre Hawksnest State Park that protects two globally rare coastal plain pond shores. Eight state-listed species have been confirmed in Hawksnest State Park with seven more
associated coastal plain ponds. As of 2024, 126 species of birds and 146 flora and fauna species were reported at Hawksnest State Park on the community science applications eBird and iNaturalist, respectively.
Awâhsh Uwatuhshât will permanently expand the habitat for all of these species.
